Heh, it seems I only write a new journal at the start of every new year. First of all I have to admit I haven't been updating my dA page much anymore. I tend to lurk a lot these days and just add other artists' works to my Favourites instead of posting much of my own work. Part of that reason is because the kind of work I do now is a bit on the minimalistic side so I feel that there isn't too much variety to show at the moment. Or maybe I'm just making excuses for not doing my own art. It's been a while since I touched any 3D modeling or even conventional 2D digital paintings using a tablet, but something tells me I should keep those skills alive, at least as a hobby. Doing something even though very roughly, more consistently, is probably better than setting a goal of doing several highly detailed, finished illustrations and not doing anything at all.
I think my recent interest in minimalistic art and design has influenced me a lot now to the point where that is probably the only viable option to take in order to get back into the swing of things. Fortunately it seems true that all great works of art start from a small and simple idea, or a sketch with minimal detail. I think if one can master the basics and presentation of simple designs, they can move up to works of gradually increasing complexity, while maintaining good presentation. It's also a lot easier to focus on the little things and simply because I tend to get lazy. With a simpler scope, it is much more likely to get something done.
